LOGAN — A 23-year-old Hyrum man has been sentenced to serve 16 more days in jail, along with the 134 days already served, for repeatedly trying to threaten to kill a woman. Dennis E. Goodwin was also ordered to be on 36 months of probation after apologizing to the victim.

Goodwin was sentenced Monday morning in 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to stalking, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, dispensing a controlled substance and aggravated assault, all third-degree felonies; along with attempted possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and violating a protective order, both class A misdemeanors.

In January, Goodwin was arrested for threatening a woman that he would hunt her down, kill her and cover himself in her blood. He was later released on pretrial supervision.

In July, Goodwin was arrested again for trying to run down several family members in an SUV. The incident took place outside a Hyrum residence. The victims were not injured.

Cache County Sheriff’s deputies later found Goodwin at his home. He was taken into custody again and held without bail.

During Monday’s sentencing, Goodwin apologized to the victims. He acknowledged to being under the influence of drugs and not thinking clearly when the crimes were committed.

The victim asked the court to send Goodwin to prison, describing him as being physically and emotionally abusive. She explained how the defendant took away her sense of safety and security.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Joshua Nemeth said Goodwin’s crimes don’t begin to cover the amount of damage done. He also asked the court for a prison sentence.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck noted how Goodwin had five separate cases in the past two years. She angrily told him, “in a civil society, we don’t treat people like this.”

In addition to jail and probation, Goodwin also ordered to complete mental health and substance abuse treatment, and have no contact with the victim.
