LOGAN — A 21-year-old Hyrum man is being bound over for trial on charges of sexually assaulting a woman last year. Suraj Singh was originally arrested in October and later released from the Cache County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Singh participated in a virtual preliminary hearing in 1st District Court Monday morning, appearing by web conference. He was previously charged with two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second and third-degree felony.
Prosecutors claim Singh groped and molested the woman on Sept. 1. The alleged victim described how he grabbed her breasts and privates without her consent.
Singh allegedly texted the woman later, apologizing for his actions. He told her that he was drunk at the time of the assault.
During Monday’s hearing, just before prosecutors were about to begin presenting their evidence in the case, defense attorney Michael McGinnis told the court Singh wished to waive his rights to the hearing. He also entered pleas of “not guilty” to both of the charges.
Singh spoke only briefly, telling the court he was willing to waive his rights. He was ordered to appear again in court next month.
Singh is currently out of jail on bail. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
