LOGAN — A 33-year-old Hyrum man has been arrested and charged with allegedly downloading child sexual abuse material, according to law enforcement. Curtis Alan Buttler was booked June 12 into the Cache County Jail after deputies executed a search warrant to his home.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies received a cyber-tip from Microsoft in February. It detailed how a computer in the valley had uploaded a file using a peer-to-peer program, containing a picture of a child engaged in sexual conduct.
The girl appeared to be around 8-10 years of age. The photo was taken in an outdoor area that was not recognizable.
Deputies traced the computer IP address to Buttler’s residence. They also tracked the internet username to an email account, registered in Buttler’s name, the PC statement detailed.
A search warrant was obtained and executed at Buttler’s home.
While being questioned, Buttler allegedly disclosed that deputies would find additional child pornography on an external hard drive, attached to the back of a desktop computer in his room. The hard drive was seized and examined, uncovering 20 or more cartoons depicting underage children involved in sex acts.
Butler was arraigned on Wednesday during a virtual hearing in Logan’s 1st District Court, appearing by web conference from jail. He was charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.
Judge Brian Cannell set Buttler’s bail at $10,000, under the condition that he have no contact with minor children or access to the internet.
According to booking records, Buttler later posted bail and was released. He is schedule to appear again in court July 2.
