LOGAN — A 41-year-old garage door installer from Hyrum has been arrested for stealing money from two customers. Kyle Bret Hansen, owner of Apex Garage Doors, was booked briefly into the Cache County Jail, following an investigation by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, deputies were contacted in June by one of the alleged victims. They described paying Hansen $4,065 to install a new garage door.
The job was never completed. Hansen reportedly gave the alleged victim various excuses, including the distribution center not receiving the order, his cellphone not working, complications with another job, and his son being involved in a traffic accident.
The alleged victim spoke to their neighbor in June and learned they were having a issue with Apex Garage Doors. The neighbor had paid Hansen $7,308 for a new garage door but never had it installed, according to charging documents.
The neighbor reportedly contacted Hansen more than 15 times, asking when the job would be completed. After several months and similar excuses, the suspect stopped responding.
Deputies learned the company’s business license was dissolved after not being renewed for registration. When law enforcement contacted Hansen, he claimed that he had an accounting company that should have sent refund payments to both customers, even though no money was ever returned, the PC Statement detailed.
According to court records, Hansen made an initial appearance Monday in Logan’s 1st District Court. Prosecutors have filed two criminal cases against him, including three felonies of theft by deception and felony communications fraud.
Hansen remains out of jail while the cases proceed through the court system. He could face more than 15 years in prison, if convicted.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
