SALT LAKE CITY — Utah skies will be graced by a flyover of F-35A Lightning II jets this Friday in celebration of Independence Day.
This annual tradition, now in its 37th year, comes from Utah’s premier Air Force Reserve unit, the 419th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base.
Between 8:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. MDT on Friday, pilots will fly over multiple cities across the state, including Lewiston and parts of Cache Valley around 10:13 a.m. Lieutenant Colonel Justin Cleveland will lead the formation, joined by Major Daniel Huber, Major Justin Newman, and Major Dustin Smail. Together, these pilots bring more than 8,000 hours of military aviation experience to the demonstration.

The 419th Fighter Wing is composed of over 1,200 “citizen airmen,” who are full-time members of their local communities while also serving part-time in the military. Most live and work in northern Utah, contributing an estimated $115 million to the state’s economy. These citizen airmen train regularly and often volunteer for deployments in support of operations worldwide.
The flyover’s logistics, including aircraft maintenance and airfield operations, are managed by the active-duty 388th Fighter Wing and operators from the 75th Air Base Wing. This tradition serves as a visible reminder of the enduring bond between Hill Air Force Base and the communities it serves, while also honoring the values of freedom, unity, and service.
