Sam Smith and Kim Petras won the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance for their song “Unholy.”
In her acceptance speech, Petras said Smith wanted her to accept the trophy because she said she is the first transgender woman to win the award.
“I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors open for me so I could be here tonight,” she said.
Petras paid tribute to her friend Sophie, a fellow trans artist who died in 2021, who she said always believed in her.
