Green Canyon’s sophomore Mia Torres chosen as the Student Spotlight for her selfless community service.

NORTH LOGAN—Green Canyon High School sophomore Mia Torres is the epitome of the Wolfpack Way according to GCHS Principal John Anderson.

Mia is active in her school and community by helping in many ways. She is a member of the Latinos in Action in her school and holds a job when she is not in school. She aspires to be a therapist.

“I just really like helping people,” Mia said. “Anytime I can, I will go help.”

Mia said she likes her school and said the Life Skills class is a good class. She also enjoys providing service through her LIA class.

During her homecoming events, Mia volunteered to play during her school’s Special Olympics soccer tournament because she is friends with the Life Skills students, according to Anderson.

“She volunteered because she is friends with the Life Skills students, and is very passionate about including them in everything,” Anderson said. “She played the entire tournament with the students, took on a lot of responsibility, and still made it back in time to be a part of our homecoming parade!”

Mia’s dad, Jesse Torres, said his daughter is not only independent but she loves to help other people.

“That’s one thing we love about her that she’s willing to help people when needed,” Torres said. “She’s a giver and she loves to give and that’s who she is.”

Mia said she hopes that when she helps, it makes a difference and really doesn’t want anyone to stress.

“I stress about everything. Like, everything is a stress to me,” Mia said. “I don’t want anybody else have to worry about something that I can help with. Like, if I can help them and that takes something off of their shoulders, that is something, I really like that.”

Torres said that even though Mia is low-key, she does have a competitive edge, including with her older sister who is currently attending Utah Valley University to be in forensics.

“We’re going to step back and see what path she’s going to want go,” Torres said. “We’re also going to provide her with the tools necessary to accomplish that path.”

Torres said he is proud of both of his two daughters as well as his son and is proud of how hard working they are. He said his advice to Mia is that working hard is how you achieve what you want.

“Nothing is ever handed to you,” Torres said. “If you want something, you work hard to get what you want.”

Mia said she tries to be there for anyone who needs her.

“I want to make people’s life easier so they can do more,” Mia said.
