BOX ELDER COUNTY — Funeral plans have been released for two Tremonton-Garland police officers who were shot and killed in the line of duty over the weekend.
Public viewings for Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Bear River High School in Garland.
Officer Estrada’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m., and Sgt. Sorensen’s funeral is planned for the following day, Friday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. Both services will take place at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on the campus of Utah State University in Logan. Officials are asking those who plan to attend to wear business attire and expect traffic issues.
Sorensen and Estrada were killed Sunday while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Tremonton. According to Chief Chad Reyes with the Brigham City Police Department, one officer was shot as he approached the home, and the second officer was killed moments later as he arrived on the scene.
A third officer, Deputy Mike Allred with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, was also shot, along with his K-9 police service dog, Azula. Both were treated for their injuries and have since been released.
The suspect, 33-year-old Ryan Michael Bate, was taken into custody after the shooting. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted aggravated murder and one count of assault.
