SMITHFIELD — In lieu of its usual holidays presentation of A Christmas Carol, the Four Seasons Theatre Company here will stage Elf the Musical this season.
Elf the Musical will play evenings from Dec. 1 to 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Sky View High School in Smithfield. Matinee performances are scheduled at 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 10.
Elf the Musical is, of course, based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Will Farrell as a human raised by Santa’s elves. The film, which was a major box office success, co-starred James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner and Bob Newhart.
The musical version of Elf is scored by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, a Broadway composing team for more than 25 years. For their recent work on The Prom and their previous stage hit the The Wedding Singer, they earned nominations for eight Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards and one Emmy Award.
Those who might be feeling Will Farrell fatigue will be happy to hear that the stage adaptation by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan significantly overhauled the show to make it more of an ensemble piece.
The cast includes newcomer Germain Costa as Buddy Hobbs, an orphan child raised by Santa Claus and his elves as – what else? — an elf. When Buddy realizes he’s human, he sets out find his birth family and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas.
The Hobbs family members will be appropriately portrayed by Logan McKenna (last seen memorably leading the Musical Theatre West production of Singin’ in the Rain), Sarah McKenna and Callum McKenna. Despite Buddy’s best efforts, his family members are all permanently on the naughty list for the grievous sin of not believing in Santa Claus.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will played by Ben Harrison and Mindy James respectively.
Other principal cast members will be Mead Hansen as Chadwick, Elisabeth Spencer as Deb, Nalani Matthias as Jovie, Emma Rosenlund as Tiara the elf, Kim Rash as Charlie the elf and Katie Ludlow as Matthews.
And what Four Season show would be complete without a huge ensemble of singers and dancers?
Members of the ensemble include Jessica Christensen, Amber Freestone, Daniel Francis, Lindsey Brogden, Bonnie May, McKay Anderson, Jarrett Anderson, Steve Williams, Holden Mathews, Derek Banks, Brianne Hansen, Kennedy Hunter, Drew Williams, Andrew Mons and Clark Walker.
