LOGAN — Emergency crews were called to a structure fire Thursday in Newton. The blaze was reported by a property owner, who called 911 saying there was a fire in a metal building behind their residence.
The Newton Fire Department reported, after notifying dispatch, the property owner tried to open an overhead door of the building, but a mechanical failure prevented it from opening fully. Two of the door sections fell into the structure.
After this attempt, the property owner stood by for firefighters to arrive.
The first crews to arrive reported heavy fire in the building. Firefighters stretched two lines, directing the hose streams through the opening created when the overhead door sections had fallen into the structure.
Additional firefighters stretched a third water line, cutting a hole in the metal siding to allow their hose stream to reach deeper into the structure, followed by removing the lower sections of the overhead door to improve access to the structure for the first two attack lines.
Crews from Logan, Smithfield, Hyrum, Trenton, Clarkston, joined firefighters from Newton to extinguish the blaze quickly. They also prevented flames from spreading to the nearby camp trailer and home.
Officials with the Newton Fire Department expressed gratitude for the dispatchers at Logan City 911 and the firefighters from the neighboring agencies for their assistance with this incident.
Firefighters reported damage to the structure and contents was significant, but no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
