BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah — Fire officials have lifted all evacuation warnings for the Johnson Canyon Fire as containment reached 65% Sunday night.
The wildfire has burned 6,889 acres in Box Elder County. Crews have made steady progress establishing dozer lines, though high winds continue to pose a significant operational challenge for personnel working to reinforce the perimeter. Firefighters remain on the scene patrolling for hot spots and monitoring conditions.
The Level 1 “Ready” evacuation status for the communities of Washakie and Portage was officially lifted at 8 p.m. Sunday. Residents were notified of the change through Everbridge emergency alerts, with updates also shared by Portage Mayor Max Huggins and official county channels.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. While the immediate evacuation threat has subsided, authorities reminded the public that Box Elder County remains under Stage 2 fire restrictions and urged residents to use extreme caution to prevent new fires.
The next official update from incident command is scheduled to be released by the county public information officer at noon Monday.
