October 5, 2020 – September 21, 2023 (age 2)

Emma Ann Hess came into our lives three years ago, and said goodbye Thursday morning – leaving us forever changed as a family, without even speaking a word.

At birth, Emma was not breathing – causing a brain injury that manifested in seizures weeks later. Through an evolving combination of supportive professionals and life adjustments, these tremors were reduced almost entirely, except when Emma got sick. Yet she remained mostly blind and unable to walk or speak throughout her life. Emma’s mother, in particular, led the way in pouring her heart into this little girl and trying to make her life better. And we all relished our chances to cuddle her, sing to her, and just to have her close. Although other physical miracles never came, our own love as a family grew during these challenging years – along with more peace and joy than we had ever known. We will never be the same.

Our deepest appreciation goes to the many loved ones who blessed Emma and our family over the years. They have held our forever-baby girl to give us date nights, temple trips and sometimes just an hour to clean the house. And now they’ve held us close – surrounding us with love during this agonizing week. We also express heartfelt thanks to the many skilled professionals who did anything they could to make Emma’s life just a little better – starting at Primary Children’s Hospital and in many other places since. Paradise City EMTs and staff at Logan Regional Hospital and Cache County were remarkably tender and kind on our darkest day, while acting as consummate professionals.

Emma is survived by her mother and father, Monique and Jacob, brothers William, Sam, Joseph and Joshua – and grandparents William and Jene (Moore) and Paul and Ann (Hess). We will see you again, Emma – very soon. Thank you for loving us so perfectly. You will continue to be our Angel in Paradise.

A memorial service will take place in Paradise Utah at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse on 9060 South 200 West. (A Zoom link will be provided through White Pine Mortuary).

A visitation for friends and family will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please reach out to someone fighting their own hard battle, but feeling alone. Be a comforting presence to them, like Emma was to us – and so many continue being for our family today. You may not even need to say a word.

Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at White Pine Funeral Home.
