CAIRO — Dozens are feared dead after a huge fire erupted at a church in Cairo on Sunday.

Egypt’s health ministry said 55 people were taken to a hospital for treatment after being injured in the blaze, which engulfed the Coptic orthodox church of Abou Seifain in Cairo’s Imbaba district.

The cause of the fire, which occurred at around 9 a.m. local time, was not known yet. The number of deaths was also not clear, but local reports said it’s estimated that dozens may have died.

“I am closely following the developments of the tragic accident … and I have directed all concerned state institutions to take all necessary measures, and immediately to deal with this incident and its effects and to provide all aspects of healthcare to the injured,” Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Facebook.
