About one in 12 Utahns currently live with Long COVID, facing the physical, mental, emotional, and financial impacts that can arise.

In a study released Wednesday, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) said Long COVID is an infection-associated chronic condition that includes a wide range of symptoms lasting months to years, that is just starting to be understood.

Treatment options are limited and do not guarantee resolution of of the illness.

Christine Maughan of Logan spoke firsthand of her battle with Long COVID Wednesday during a media event in Salt Lake City.

She said she had her first COVID symptoms in March of 2020 and was tested immediately. More than four years later symptoms still come and go and she has good days and bad. She has received regular vaccinations and boosters

DHHS learned from the most recent data that in 2024 nearly one in five in Utah have ever experienced Long COVID. Also, there are no simple tests to diagnose Long COVID and there is no single treatment for it.
