LOGAN – The Cache County Trails Department has announced the grand reopening of the Deep Canyon Trailhead above Mendon is slated for Saturday, Sept. 19.
On that day, the public is being invited to have breakfast with Mayor Ed Buist of Mendon at the trailhead starting at 8 a.m., then to hike or bike the Deep Canyon trail or Wayne’s Loop with other outdoor enthusiasts.
Located about 2 miles south of the town of Mendon, the new Deep Canyon Trailhead facility will feature better vehicle access, a larger parking lot and restrooms, according to Emily Fletcher, the regional trails coordinator for Cache County Development Services.
The goal of the project, which has been underway since summer of 2022, is to reduce the trailhead’s environmental impacts, safely accommodate hikers and support the reopening of the family friendly Wayne’s Loop Trail.
The Deep Canyon Trail offers a three-mile trek that gains some 3,000 feet from the trailhead and provides access to the Wellsville Mountain Wilderness Area.
County officials acknowledge that this project would not have been possible without the dedication of the Trails Cache Team and financial support from federal, state and local entities.
Those financial contributors include the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the American Rescue Plan Act, the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation and the Cache County RAPZ and Restaurant Tax Program.
Local officials also credit the hard work by Legrand Johnson Construction and the Cache County Public Works Department to construct the parking lot and improve the access road.
Breakfast for the grand reopening event on Sept. 19 will be provided by Caffe Ibis and Lee’s Marketplace.
To access the Deep Canyon Trailhead from Mendon, turn west on 300 North and travel uphill about two miles on the dirt road to the trailhead.
