LOGAN – Virtually every metric within Thursday’s new weekly COVID report from the state health department has increased once more.
The surge apparent in recent reports continues with 12 more COVID deaths and 5,611 new positive cases in the last seven days.
One more telling indicator: Utah’s seven-day average of new cases grew in one week from 641 to 805. Omicron subvariants are the reason for the surge according to state officials.
Fewer Utahns are getting tested so the state is now watching the number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and both are on the rise. With 139 more hospital visits the last seven days there have now been almost 35,000 Utahns hospitalized since the start of the pandemic.
In the last week the number of COVID-19 patients in ICUs was up by two to 20.
Exactly 2,023,383 Utahns are fully vaccinated which is more than 62 percent of the state’s population. Utah’s total COVID cases the last 26 months is approaching 950,000 with 4,777 deaths from the coronavirus.
The latest weekly update from the Bear River Health Department shows COVID deaths in Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties still total 247. Total cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic number nearly 52,000 in the district.
Just over 71 percent of the population of the district have had at least lone dose of the vaccine and almost 265,000 doses have been administered.
