Cache County policy analyst Micah R. Safsten is among three candidates vying for the post of county clerk/auditor in a GOP Special Election to be held on Wednesday, June 28.

CACHE COUNTY – Micah R. Safsten says that working as a policy analyst for the Cache County Council has given him valuable insight into the current needs of the county.

Safsten is one of three candidates who have filed to run for Cache County Clerk/Auditor in the GOP Special Election slated for June 28.

“Right now,” he observes, “Cache County needs a clerk/auditor that can commit to independence and focus on the day-to-day responsibilities of that office.

“That means refraining from endorsing local candidates or engaging in the political process in a way that might compromise the integrity — or perceived integrity – of audits and elections.”

Safsten explains that he is running for the post recently vacated by former Clerk/Auditor Jess Bradfield because, over the past two years, routine political differences in the county’s government have become “uncomfortably personal.”

But Safsten hopes to restore faith in the clerk/auditor’s office by providing new leadership.

If selected by fellow Republicans during the special election, Safsten lists his goals as becoming informed of the details of the county budget and where tax dollars are going; seeking ways to improve elections; making county policy more accessible; and developing a system for measuring the effectiveness of government so that audits and the government itself can be improved upon.

Safsten is a graduate of Utah State University, with a bachelor’s degree in Law and Constitutional Studies (2020) and a master’s degree in Political Science (2022).

His previous experience includes an internship in the U.S. House of Representatives with Congressman Chris Stewart; an internship in the Utah Legislature with Senator Scott Sandall; and a fellowship with the Center for Growth and Opportunity at Utah State University.

The other candidates who have filed for the county post include Bryson Behm, currently the county’s acting clerk/auditor; and David Benson, a management consultant and chair of the Cache County Republican Veterans Caucus and vice-chair of the Cache County GOP Northeast District.

Additional candidates can toss their hats in the ring until 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, according to Geoff Cox, chair of the Cache County Republican Party. Would-be candidates can submit their applications to Cox at P.O. Box 43, Logan, UT, 84323.

If submitting an application electronically, a signed paper application must also be submitted to the same address prior to the filing deadline on June 22.

The special election by members of the county’s GOP Central Committee will take place on Wednesday, June 28 at the Mount Logan Middle School. Credentialing for the party’s faithful will begin at 6 p.m. with the election to fill that vacancy in the Cache County government to begin at 7 p.m.

The Mount Logan Middle School is located at 875 North, 200 East in Logan.
