SALT LAKE CITY — A few weeks back was Energy Week on Utah’s Capitol Hill. One company, Utah Clean Energy’s goal is to bring an alternate voice to the energy debate and legislation.
On KVNU’s For the People program last week, climate scientist and policy analyst for the organization, Logan Mitchell, said he was a bit disappointed with the focus during energy week.
“Looking at the focus of energy week, and it’s really been looking at the energy system of our past and trying to slow down the transition. But instead of looking at our future and trying to figure out ‘where do we need to go?’ to make sure we’re meeting our needs and having a clear-eyed understanding of what’s driving energy markets, the legislature is really focused on the past right now, which is a little frustrating,” he explained.
Mitchell said if you look at Utah, regionally and globally, the state is kind of at the end of the pack.
“A lot of other places are moving much faster than us and have kind of paved the way for this transition. Just look around the world, and you see many examples of phasing out of coal for electricity production and phasing in of new resources that are cheaper and cost-effective.”
He said the whole idea is that there are professionals that are working on this and understand these changes, and Mitchell said, they need to be given the flexibility that they need.
