Montpelier City Hall where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plan to build a new temple.

MONTPELIER, Idaho — Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have announced the location of the Montpelier Idaho Temple. The temple will be built on a 2.6 acre site at the intersection of Washington and Sixth North, east of the Montpelier Tabernacle.

The announced location is where the historic Montpelier City Hall sits. The building is now closed and according to Bear Lake County Records, the property is owned by the church.

A press release Friday morning said the future temple will be a two-story structure, about 27,000 square feet in size. It did not specify though whether or not church leaders intend to demolish city hall or repurpose it.

The church has remodeled historic buildings in the past, to be used as temples. The Vernal Utah, Provo City Center, Copenhagen Denmark and Manhattan New York temples were all modified from existing structures.

The Montpelier Temple was announced on April 3, by Church President Russell M. Nelson. In addition to the Montpelier temple, Idaho has eight other temples in operation, under construction or announced in Boise, Burley, Idaho Falls, Meridian, Pocatello, Rexburg (Rexburg Idaho Temple and Rexburg Idaho North Temple) and Twin Falls.

Church leaders report that there are more than 15,000 members in the area. Many of those use to travel to Logan, Utah or Afton, Wyoming to participate in temple services.

Details about the design and when construction will begin have not been released.
