Salt Lake City — After more than 25 years of dedicated service, including the last seven as its leader, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Jess L. Anderson is retiring. His last day will be July 17th.
Commissioner Anderson started with the Utah Highway Patrol and rose through the ranks, holding various leadership positions within the department. During his time as Commissioner, he spearheaded major advancements in things like emergency response, community safety, and working with the state legislature. Throughout his career, he has been committed to “Keeping Utah Safe.”
Commissioner Anderson shared, “Serving as Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished and the dedicated professionals I’ve had the privilege of leading. It’s time for me to step into a new chapter with my family, and I leave knowing the department is in capable hands.”
Governor Spencer J. Cox has appointed Beau Mason as the new Commissioner of Public Safety. Mason is a 20-year veteran with the department, most recently serving as Deputy Commissioner. In that role, he oversaw crucial divisions like Emergency Medical Services, the State Bureau of Investigation, and Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Commissioner Mason holds two master’s degrees and will soon complete a third. He’s also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
Commissioner Mason expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m deeply honored by the trust Governor Cox and the department have placed in me. Commissioner Anderson has built a strong foundation of excellence, and I look forward to continuing that legacy with the incredible professionals at DPS. Together, we will advance our mission and ensure the safety of Utah’s communities.”
