LOGAN — Cache Makers hosts many volunteer-led youth groups focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEAM). As part of their ongoing STEAM Discover program, they will be kicking off something called “The Tomb of the Cursed Mummy” in January.

It’s basically an Egyptology course for kids. They will be learning about Egyptian mythology, the construction and the craftsmanship behind the pyramids and the tools they used at the time.

On KVNU’s For the People program on Thursday, Max Allen from Cache Makers talked about how they put the program together.

“We are part of the national 4-H club which is a marvelous thing, and the 4-H club actually has a curriculum for learning about ancient Egypt and doing crafting projects, kind of recreating the technology and art and language, hieroglyphics and such of ancient Egypt, and we’ve kind of adapted that with a few of our own additions,” Allen explained.

The course is geared for 6th through 8th graders. Allen said each week they will be talking about a different aspect.

“For instance, on Week 1 we’ll be learning…a very brief overview of the roughly 3,000 year history of ancient Egypt, but we’ll be learning about language and things like that. And then we’re going to be having them learn some basic hieroglyphics, and learning how to write their own names in it and trying to write it into clay and paint it, kind of as close as we can get to the original thing as possible.”

Allen has a background in private education and what he loves about Cache Makers is that it has a hands-on, practical, accessible-type teaching style that is tailored to kids that age, to help them get into things that they may not have considered.

“Right now, I’m in the middle of teaching a class on acting and it’s really exciting to see kids that have never considered doing anything with that, discovering talents that they may have. I think that’s the main reason why I like working here is we’re just trying to get kids to expand their horizons and discover cool things.”

The course will run every Wednesday night in January from 6p.m. to 730p.m. For more information go to CacheMakers.org.
