SALT LAKE CITY — A single-vehicle crash killed a Cache County man and his 2–year-old son Saturday. The accident was reported shortly after 1 p.m. off southbound I-215 West and 1000 South in Salt Lake City.

According to a statement from the Department of Public Safety, Travis Melvyn Weight and his 2-year-old boy, Prescott Joe Weight died in the crash.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene of the accident after receiving calls about a blue Dodge pickup truck was driving suddenly off the highway and into a small ravine nearby.

UHP located the truck, which had overturned into a gully that was filled with water. The two died at the scene but were not identified Saturday as troopers worked to notify Weight’s family.

An investigation is ongoing, according to DPS. It wasn’t immediately known what caused the pickup to swerve suddenly, and authorities have not released information on whether factors such as road debris, drowsy or distracted driving, or DUI are part of the investigation.

Prescott’s mother, Sara Weight posted on social media, calling Travis her best friend. She said both were her life and she will miss them greatly.

Troopers have not said whether or not Weight or his son were wearing seatbelts, or if the child was in a car seat.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
