CACHE COUNTY  – With ballots now starting to go out in the mail to selected registered voters in Cache County, the municipal election season of 2025 has officially begun with a primary contest.

Eight local communities will participate in the Aug. 12 primary election to winnow the ranks of candidates prior to the Nov. 4 general election.

Those municipalities are Hyrum, Lewiston, Logan, North Logan, Providence, Richmond, Smithfield and Wellsville, according to County Clerk Bryson Behm.

While those primary ballots will arrive automatically in the mailboxes of affected voters, returning their ballots will be a little more complicated.

Under a recent change to state law, postmarks will no longer be accepted as proof of timely ballot submission. For a ballot to be counted in the upcoming primary election, it must have arrived at the Cache County Clerk’s Office not later than 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

In addition to using the U.S. Postal Service, primary voters can also return their mail-in ballots at official drop box locations in their respective communities.

In Logan, those dropbox locations are in the parking lot of the Cache County Administration Building at 179 North Main Street; at the County Clerk’s Office inside the admin building; and on the campus of Utah State University at 890 North, 900 East.

In the northern portion of the county, the dropbox location in Lewiston is at City Hall (29 South Main Street).

In Richmond, ballots can be returned by also depositing them at the City Hall (90 South, 100 West).

The dropbox location in Smithfield is at City Hall (96 Main Street).

In North Logan, the dropbox location is at the City Library (475 East, 2500 North).

To the south, the dropbox location in Providence is at City Hall (164 Gateway Drive).

In Hyrum, the dropbox location is at City Hall (60 West Main Street).

Finally, in Wellsville, the dropbox location is at the City Offices (75 East Main Street).

Behm explains that early in-person voting will be available daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cache County Administration Building from Tuesday, Aug. 5 to Friday, Aug. 9.

In-person voting on Tuesday, Aug. 12 will be at the Cache County Event Center at 490 South, 500 West in Logan.

Data from the 2024 presidential election indicates that there are more than 70,000 registered voters in Cache County.

A breakdown of voter affiliation at that time showed nearly 42,000 registered Republicans; about 7,000 Democrats; nearly 20,000 unaffiliated voters; and about 2,000 members of the Independent American Party.

The remaining 1,500 voters were affiliated with other parties such as the Constitution, Green, Libertarian, United Utah or Utah Forward parties.

The County Clerk’s Office is located in the Cache County Administration Building at 179 North Main Street in Logan.
