LOGAN — Logan City Police Department Animal Control is advising residents to be cautious after receiving multiple reports of a badger sighting near Lundstrom Park.

According to the department, animal control officers have not seen the badger themselves, but residents are confident in the identification. While there have been no reports of the animal showing aggression toward people or pets, authorities are urging the public to be cautious.

Officials with the Utah DNR Wildlife Resources report badgers are members of the weasel family and are common in the grasslands and deserts of Utah. They are distinguishable by their long, gray guard hairs, black cheek spots and a white stripe extending from the nose to the forehead.

Badgers are generally defensive rather than aggressive, but they may defend themselves if they feel threatened or are cornered. Animal Control is asking residents to leave the animal alone and back away slowly if it is seen. Pet owners are also reminded to keep dogs on leashes to prevent them from approaching the badger.

If a badger is on private property, an animal control officer can set a trap to relocate it. For questions or to report a badger on your property, residents can contact Logan City Police Department Animal Control at 435-753-7555.
