Center Street in downtown Logan will be the starting point of the Top of Utah Logan City Marathon on Saturday Sept. 19.

LOGAN – In April, personal finance website WalletHub recognized Logan as the 8th best city in America to start a business. The community was also honored in March by the Milken Institute as the Best-Performing City in America. Now, the community is being identified by yet another publication for its strong economy and positive business environment.

Recently, Go.Verizon recognized Logan as the #1 Small City in America to start a small business.

“In its fifth consecutive year among the top 50 small cities for small businesses, Logan has earned its highest ranking yet, coming in first place,” the publication said. “This comes at no surprise seeing that the average commute to work in Logan is 18 minutes, which is much lower than in heavily populated cities.

“In addition to low commute times, business is booming with easy access to broadband, generous business loans, and a tax score 22% higher than the average city on the list. This picturesque college town is no doubt an attractive location for small business owners.”

Logan was joined by two other Utah communities who cracked the top 10: Millcreek at #4 and Lehi at #9. Other Utah communities to make the list include Taylorsville (25) and South Jordan (37). In Idaho, the top small city to start a small business is Idaho Falls, ranked 69th overall.

In all, 333 cities with populations between 50,000-75,000 residents were examined based a variety of criteria, including: percent of residents with at least a Bachelor’s degree, access to broadband, travel time to work, income per capita, loans per business and tax score.

“Launching a small business in a big city can be challenging due to high prices, traffic, excessive noise, and oftentimes fierce competition,” the publication added. “Smaller cities, on the other hand, often lack the competition found in larger cities, showing that, with good market research, your small business idea may be just what a small city needs. “
