CACHE COUNTY – Republicans here are wasting no time in seeking a replacement for outgoing County Executive David Zook.
On Aug. 15, Zook announced that he planned to retire from public life on Monday, Sept. 8.
One day later, the Executive Committee of the Cache County Republicans scheduled a special election to replace Zook on Thursday, Sept. 11.
The location of that contest by local GOP faithful has yet to be determined, according to Natalie Levi, the chair of the Cache County Republicans.
The filing period for potential candidates is now open and will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.
4.
Levi explains that candidates applying to fill the soon-to-be-vacant post of county executive must meet the qualifications listed on the Filing Affidavit per Utah Code 20A-9-201.
Those qualification and the application format can be found at https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title20A/Chapter9/C20A-9_1800010118000101.pdf
Potential candidates should submit their applications electronically to Levi at chaircachegop@gop.com on or before the Sept. 4 deadline. After that, candidates can mail a signed paper application to Cache GOP, P.O. Box 43, Logan UT 84323.
The winner of the county special election will serve out the unexpired term of the former county executive until December of 2026.
Members of the public are invited to attend the Special Election on Sept. 11, but under GOP bylaws only members of the Cache County Republican Party Central Committee, precinct officers and county delegates will be able to cast ballots.
Credentialing for GOP voters will begin at 5 p.m., with the special election to follow at 6 p.m.
Zook has served as county executive since January 2021. His previous public service experience included 15 years with San Bernardino County in California as well as a decade with Nibley as city manager.
