LOGAN — A man is alive after the quick and brave actions of law enforcement, who rescued him from icy waters Friday afternoon. The incident happened near the ponds behind the Presto plant in Lewiston.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Ramirez said the man was attempting to rescue his dog that had fallen through the ice. In the process, he fell into the freezing water and became trapped.

The man’s children acted quickly and called 911 for help.

Deputies arrived on scene just after Lewiston EMS and Smithfield Fire personnel arrived. Working together, responders broke through the ice to reach the victim.

“In a remarkable display of bravery,” Ramirez said, “one of our deputies, equipped with a life vest and a hatchet, entered the icy water and broke his way through the ice toward the victim.”

A Smithfield firefighter followed behind the deputy. As the they reached the victim, he slipped underwater.

The firefighter and deputy successfully rescued the man and brought him back to the shore safely.

Paramedics treated the victim for cold exposure. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The deputy involved was also checked out as a precaution.

Ramirez said, “this incident highlights the courage and dedication of our deputies, Smithfield Fire personnel, Lewiston first responders, and the exceptional collaboration between our agencies.”
