LOGAN – Music Theatre West has announced play selections for its 2025 season.
The productions slated for next year will include the musicals Emma, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Addams Family.
The stage adaptation of Emma, based on Jane Austen’s charming and witty novel of the same name, had previously been announced in the form of an audition call slated for Nov. 22.
The musical — with book, lyrics and music by Paul Gordon – originally debuted in 2018.
It’s filled with delightful mistaken intentions, budding romances and the irresistible allure of Regency-era matchmaking gone completely awry.
Directed by well-known local actress Celeste Baillio, Emma will be presented Jan. 31 through Feb. 15, 2025 at the Utah Theatre.
Next on the MTW production schedule will be The Scarlet Pimpernel, a swashbuckling adventure set during the French Revolution.
That musical was announced by Wendi Hassan, the managing director of the Cache Valley Center for the Arts, during a live broadcast on KVNU on Oct. 24.
With music by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Nan Knighton, The Scarlet Pimpernel is based on the 1905 novel by Baroness Emma Orczy, a Hungarian-born novelist and playwright.
Operating under a mild-manner alias, the hero of Orczy’s novel is an early precursor to modern-day spy fiction and super heroes. The musical version of The Scarlet Pimpernel ran on Broadway from 1997 through 2000 prior to a national tour.
Hassan explained that The Scarlet Pimpernel has been added to the MTW schedule as a replacement for Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre productions which are normally staged at the Ellen Eccles Theatre during July. Those UFOMT productions are now planned for the more intimate Utah Theatre in 2025.
The Scarlet Pimpernel will be presented July 7 through 14, 2025.
In fall of next year, MTW will present the local favorite The Addams Family.
With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, The Addams Family brings to life all the bizarre characters from the cartoons drawn by Charles Adams for the New Yorker Magazine for 50 years starting in 1938. Those off-center cartoons also inspired a television show in the 1960s and a wildly popular series of films in the 1990s.
The musical is familiar to local theater-goers who made the trek through Logan Canyon each fall to see consecutive productions of The Addams Family by the Davis clan at Pickleville Playhouse in Garden City from 2019 through 2022.
MTW will present The Addams Family from Oct. 10 through 18, 2025 at the Ellen Eccles Theatre.
The Ellen Eccles Theatre is located at 43 South Main Street in downtown Logan.
