LOGAN — A 52-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to jail and other conditions for sexually abusing a teenage girl more than a year ago. AI Childress was ordered to report to the Cache County Jail next week after apologizing to the court for what he did.
Childress was sentenced Monday morning in 1st District Court in Logan. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to amended charges of sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor; lewdness, a class B misdemeanor; and attempted lewdness, a class C misdemeanor.
According to Logan City Police Lt. Brett Randall, officers received a report in November 2022 from the Division of Child and Family Services, describing how Childress had molested the teenage girl. The crimes had occurred earlier in the year, around January 2022.
During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Herm Olsen asked the court for leniency so Childress wouldn’t lose his job. He also explained how his client had already begun sex-offender treatment and therapy.
Childress said he had experienced sorrow, guilt and shame for what happened. He promised that he would never do anything like it again.
Judge Spencer Walsh told Childress to continue in treatment to make sure it never happened again. However, he expressed concern with some of the defendant’s reported tendencies and attractions to teenagers.
Judge Walsh sentenced Childress to seven days in jail, followed by 23 days home confinement. He said it would hopefully serve as a reminder of the severity of the crimes.
Childress was also ordered to serve 36 months of probation and be placed on the sex-offender registry. He was also prohibited from accessing the internet, except for work purposes, pay a $750 fine and continue therapy.
Judge Walsh told Childress, “Your past doesn’t define you but what you do going forward will.”
