WESTON – Across the Utah boarder the little town of Weston, Idaho is planning a big Pioneer Day Celebration. The citizens there have been recognizing the arrival of the Mormon pioneers (early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latte-day Saints) to the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.

Weston was settled in 1865 by the same Latter-day Saint pioneers, and the heritage may have been commemorated since then.

Camile Keller was assigned by the Weston City Council to coordinate Weston’s biggest yearly celebration. It should bring in hundreds of visitors, most of them have ties to the town named for being on the west bank of the Bear River.

The celebration has changed some it has been modernized and additional activities have been added since then, some has remained the same.

“We have more money to work with this year because area businesses have been very generous,” she said. “Because of their generosity we are able to keep costs down for families to participate in some of the activities.”

Visitors can still find families, friends, and neighbors gathering to enjoy a parade, food, games, and remembering those who came before.

“We are bringing back the greased pole and putting $500 on the top,” she said. “They have to climb to the top to get the money. I think the pole will be over by the ball diamond and it will start at 2 p.m.”

A person has to climb to the top of the greased pole to retrieve the $500.

“We are going to have a giant sawdust treasure hunt for coins,” Keller said. This year there will be $300 in change for the kids to sift through.”

The foam machines are back and the Woodward Country Store shootout melodrama will be at 7 p.m. It is generally has a crowd.

“We’ve always had a pretty big crowd for the fireworks,” she said. “Tom Green is from Weston, and he works for TNT Fireworks owner Jared Jensen and they usually go all out.”
