LOGAN – Thanks to a digital class, and a web accessibility evaluation tool from its Institute for Disability Research, Policy & Practice (IDRPP) Utahn State University is more accessible to students with disabilities.
Jared Smith is Director of USU’s WebAIM initiative.
“We help entities make their websites and digital documents more accessible to people with disabilities,” said Smith. “We were founded in 1999 and over the last 24 years we have worked with entities all over the world in helping them improve their accessibility to individuals with disabilities.”
To accomplish this work, USU uses WebAIM’s Document Accessibility Course online and so do nearly 500 other institutions of higher learning around the nation. Nearly 20 percent of the Department of Education’s accredited universities have taken advantage of this training created at USU.
“We’re always refining it,” Smith added. “It’s been available for a few years and as you mentioned it’s used quite widely, especially in higher education to make digital documents — word documents, power-point files and PDF files — more accessible to those with disabilities.”
