LOGAN – Utah State University Interim President Al Smith was not surprised at the results of a new report which details USU’s significant economic contributions to Utah.

The report, commissioned by the Utah System of Higher Education, indicates that in 2023 USU supported more than 17,000 jobs, $1.0 billion in earnings and $1.4 billion in gross domestic product.

Smith said it is a powerful reminder that investing in higher education’s investing in Utah. During the 2022-23 academic year, USU awarded 6,764 degrees, equipping graduates for careers in Utah’s economy.

In 2023 when USU employed 10,436 it made the school the largest employer in Cache County and the seventh largest employer in Utah.

Over half of USU graduates work in-state five years after graduation.

Research funding in FY 2023 drew $450 million, most of it new money to Utah which supported 6,665 jobs.
