LOGAN – In today’s world, most commercial aircraft fly at high subsonic speeds, which means just below the speed of sound.

At the same time, aerospace companies recognize the significant difference it would make in travel times around the globe by just traveling two times the speed of sound.

That is where Utah State University’s AeroLab comes in, specializing in creating software for aeronautical vehicle design.

Doug Hunsaker, professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, leads the AeroLab. He said through aerodynamic theory and equations, the software can predict aircraft properties in flight, such as lift, drag and surface temperatures.

USU researchers want to help us speed up by making the design phase of new super and hypersonic aircraft faster. They have built the software from scratch by going back to fundamental theory and starting from there.
