BOX ELDER COUNTY — An active search and rescue operation is underway at Willard Bay.

According to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, a 38-year-old man from Davis County was swimming with his family when a storm came in. He reportedly drowned in the northwest end of the bay.

Deputies said his 17-year-old son was also struggling in the water but that he is now “well.”

This is the second time in a week that a man went missing in the same area.

Last weekend, Robert Mittendorf, a 51-year-old Weber County man was swimming with his son near their boat when a sudden storm swept through the area.

Mittendorf went underwater and did not resurface. His body was recovered on Tuesday.

The Division of State Parks urges all outdoor recreators to prioritize safety.

Lindsay Higbee with the Utah Department of Natural Resources said, “Always recreate with a buddy, wear a life jacket, and remain aware of weather conditions. Ensure someone knows your location and expected return time.”
