LOGAN — A rock slide Friday night in Sardine Canyon, US 89/91 caused multiple accidents and injuries, sending four people to the hospital and shutting down the highway for two hours.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Nelson said three large boulders rolled off the mountain side, between Brigham City and Mantua near milepost five. The largest rock was about the size of a small car.

“Two of them came to rest in the roadway and were struck by two of the vehicles, causing both of them to crash and rollover,” said Nelson. “There were some other rocks and debris that came down with the boulders and ended up in the roadway and they cause damage to four other cars.”

Four people were treated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Nelson said crews were afraid more rocks would come off the mountainside so the canyon was shut down for safety reasons.

“We got the assistance of UDOT and they brought up a front-end loader, a scrapper and also a sweeper,” said Nelson. “They cleared the rocks and debris for us and then they also had to repair the roadway. There was about four, pretty significant gouges from where the rocks hit that had to be patched up and fixed.”

The canyon was reopened around 11 p.m. Heavy rains Friday night are believed to have caused the slide.
