LOGAN — A 34-year-old Providence man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenage girl outside a Providence apartment complex last year. Laiklang L. Amu was booked into the Cache County Jail after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest in December.

According to the warrant affidavit, a juvenile contacted Cache County Sheriff’s deputies in October, alleging Amu had inappropriately touched her. Both were residents in the same housing complex.

The juvenile described how after the incident, Amu obtained her phone number and Facebook profile, and began requesting the two meet again. When she complied, he allegedly pulled her behind a dumpster and raped her. The girl said the suspect held her wrists and covered her mouth, so she couldn’t push him away or scream.

The affidavit stated, deputies conducted a recorded phone conversation between Amu and the alleged victim. During the call, he reportedly admitted to having sex and inappropriately touching the girl.

In November, deputies attempted to make contact with Amu at his apartment but no one would answer the door. They later learned that the suspect had been evicted and fled to Washington.

According to jail records, Amu was booked Friday night on suspicion of rape, a first-degree felony, and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. He is being held without bail, pending arraignment in 1st District Court on formal charges.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
