LOGAN — A 40-year-old Preston, Idaho woman remains hospitalized after the vehicle she was driving veered off Valley View Highway and rolled into the Benson Marina, late Wednesday night.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Tina Street and her 11-year-old daughter were traveling eastbound on State Road 30 when she drifted off the road, down the embankment and into the marsh.
The car rolled once and landed on its roof.
Street was not wearing her seat belt and had to be extricated from the vehicle. She suffered severe injuries to her head. She was taken to Logan Regional Hospital by ambulance and later flown by helicopter to a Salt Lake area hospital.
Street’s daughter was wearing a seat belt and had only minor injuries.
Troopers are trying to determine if Street was distracted just prior to the accident, or drowsy and struggling with fatigue. It doesn’t appear drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Perry said tire marks showed that Street first drifted off the right side of the road before swerving back and crossing the incoming lane, and driving down into the marsh.
Troopers said the crash happened in deep mud and dense weeds that likely kept the car from rolling more than once.
