LOGAN — Fire crews are conducting a prescribed burn Tuesday east of Logan, near Beaver Mountain Ski Resort. The fires will likely produce smoke that will be visible to motorists travelling along Logan Canyon, US-89.

Dallin Bodrero, Fire Warden with Utah Forestry Fire and State Lands, said crews will be burning slash piles in the area between the ski resort and Beaver Creek Road. The operation will begin Tuesday morning and could continue for several days depending on the weather.

The slash piles were created over the past couple years by forest crews, thinning trees and gathering deadfalls. Some of the wood was sold, and the rest was collected into piles and dried out.

The prescribed fires are intended to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, restore, improve forest health and resilience, and maintain critical watershed function.

Bodrero said crews expect the slash piles will produce a fair amount of smoke at times. Firefighters will stay in the area monitoring the fires until they burn out.

Motorists are being asked not to contact 911.
