June 11, 1937 – July 29, 2022 (age 85)

Norma Jean Boxx passed away peacefully at home July 29, 2022, at the age of 85.  She was born June 11, 1937, in Stark, Florida to William Callis Manning Sr. (1907-1955) and Mary Margaret Hill (1911-1979).  She was the third of six children.

Norma Jean, who was affectionately known to family as Bo Bo, grew up in Starke and later in Jacksonville, Florida. She grew up living next door to her maternal grandparents and learned from an early age the value for love of family and hard work. She was very proud of her southern roots. She was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a faithful member, holding numerous callings throughout her life. She graduated from high school in Jacksonville. Norma Jean married Walter Leslie Boxx in the Manti LDS temple in Manti, Utah on June 24, 1958. From 1959 to 1963 they welcomed four beautiful children.

Norma Jean started her accounting career at Knight Paper Company in Jacksonville. She later moved with her family to Utah where she worked for Thiokol Corporation off and on for many years. She lived in Brigham City and Logan at different times throughout her life. She was a gypsy at heart and moved between Utah and Florida too many times to count. She loved living in both places and, surprisingly, could remember all the houses she had lived in. She had a sharp mind and great memory.

She was best known for her excellent southern cooking skills. She loved to cook for family, friends, church functions and work parties. Her famous mustard-based barbecue sauce that she made from her secret recipe was a big hit, not only with family, but with many others fortunate enough to indulge. She was teased that she should have her secret recipe engraved on the back of her headstone for posterity,
but she just laughed. Much like her mother, her laughter was infectious because once she started, she could not stop even while talking.  Norma Jean had a great sense of humor. In recent weeks she stated, “I just hope the Lord has a Pepsi machine up there.”

She loved life, her faith, family, and friends. Although her family was not always physically affectionate while growing up, she knew she was loved. During that time her family expressed love by giving and doing tasks for loved ones. This was Norma Jean. She had a heart of gold and was generous to a fault.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Marjorie Manning Dickey, brother William Callis Manning Jr., and sister Weta Frances Manning.

She is survived by her brother, Larry George (Ginger) Manning, sister Hilda Denise (Jim) Rowland, and sister-in-law Bonnie Paulk Manning; Her children, son Mark Alan (Linda) Boxx, son Randy LeGrand (Lynn) Boxx, daughter Pana Lou Boxx, and daughter Leila Jean White; 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren with two more on the way and 1 great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the Oak Brook Ward meetinghouse at 645 Trail Circle, Logan, Utah 84321.

A short viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.

Interment will be at the Brigham City Cemetery around 2:00 PM.
