LOGAN – Classes are underway Monday at Utah State University, 134 years after the school opened its educational doors Sept. 2,1890 with 139 students and nine faculty on hand in the south wing of Old Main.

This month more than 28,000 students will begin classes at USU, more than 20,000 of them enrolled at the main campus in Logan. There are eight USU regional campuses throughout the state.

Welcome Week events at the Logan campus begin with a free breakfast Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for VRO students in the Taggart Student Center. The Huntsman School of Business is serving free donuts at “Back to Business with Donuts” from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Aggie Rec Center is providing a healthy snack made by Campus Rec Nutrition from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) invites USU students to “Light on the Hill” with food trucks, free treats, and entertainment (please bring cash for food trucks to benefit CHaSS scholarships.)

The first week of classes ends with the season opener for Aggie football Saturday at home against Robert Morris at 6 p.m. in Maverik Stadium.

USU’s campus in Logan is the oldest and the largest public residential campus in Utah, with over 84 percent of students living away from home.

USU is classified among “Carnegie R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity.”

The Utah Territorial Assembly founded Utah State Agriculture College March 8, 1888, 25 years after the Morrill Act set the stage for land-grant institutions to be established throughout the nation. The school grew to become Utah State University in 1957.
