RANDOLPH — A human body was found by four teenage boys on dirt bikes earlier this month near Bear Lake.
On April 8, The Rich County Sheriff’s Office received a call that the body had been located near a road approximately five miles west of Randolph.
Rich County deputies responded and began investigating the scene. They contacted the Weber County Sheriff’s Office for assistance, and two people who specialize in crime scene preservation were dispatched.
Deputies were not able to locate any identification at the scene where the body was found, although it appeared to be a young woman.
An autopsy was performed on Monday by the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in collaboration with the sheriff’s office.
According to deputies, the medical examiner’s office was able to obtain fingerprints from the body. They identified the 22-year-old Layton woman as Sophia Lower.
Deputies said her family reported her missing on Mar. 29 after not hearing from Sophia for several weeks.
The sheriff’s office contacted a detective from the Layton Police Department, and the case is still under investigation.
According to officials, Lower’s family was contacted and informed that her body was found.
The medical examiner’s office hasn’t released an official report yet on Lower’s cause of death.
