LOGAN — A 47-year-old Logan woman has been sentenced for using the debit cards of a deceased man to make more than $3,000 in purchases. Holly Marie Markey and Tracy Kent Broadhead, 53, were arrested in December 2024.
According to court records, Markey was sentenced Nov. 17 in Logan’s 1st District Court. She previously accepted a plea deal, pleading “no contest” to two counts of unlawful use of a financial card, a third-degree felony; and possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor.
According to prosecutors, Logan City Police officers received a call from an individual who said two of their deceased father’s debit cards had been used to make multiple purchases. Bank statements showed the transactions began the day of the father’s death and continued for about a month.
The victim told officers that he suspected Broadhead and Markey were the individuals using the cards. The two individuals were reportedly roommates with the man before he died.
Financial documents showed Broadhead and Markey made 20 transactions using the stolen cards. The purchases included a new refrigerator and dishwasher from a home improvement store, beer and cigarettes from a convenience store, and paying a utility bill.
On Dec. 4, 2024, law enforcement served a search warrant to Broadhead and Markey’s home. They found the newly purchased appliances along with several of the deceased man’s financial transaction cards.
During last week’s sentencing hearing, Markey was ordered to serve 30 days in jail, given credit for 25 days already served. She was also placed on probation for three years.
According to court records, Broadhead has pleaded not guilty to similar charges and remains out of jail.
