LOGAN — A 23-year-old Logan man already in prison for sexually abusing a child has pleaded guilty now to molesting a girl years ago. David Matthew Thomas Russell, who is already serving a prison sentence, accepted a plea deal and will be sentenced next month.

Russell participated in a virtual hearing Monday afternoon in 1st District Court, appearing by web conference from prison. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a child, amended to a second-degree felony.

According to prosecutor’s evidence, Russell molested the 8-year-old girl in 2016. She didn’t report the crime to law enforcement until August 2021.

Court records show, Russell originally pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child in Tooele County’s 3rd District Court in February 2017. He was sentenced to a term of 1-15 years in prison.

During Monday’s hearing, attorneys explained that as part of Russell’s latest plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop three remaining charges. They will also recommend his sentence run concurrent with his existing sentence, meaning he won’t serve any additional time.

Russell spoke briefly, telling the court he wished to waive his rights to a fair trial and plead guilty to the charge.

Judge Spencer Walsh accepted Russell’s plea deal but cautioned that he is not bound to follow any sentencing recommendations. He scheduled a sentencing hearing for August 29.
