LOGAN — A 31-year-old man Logan man was arrested for allegedly striking another individual with a baseball bat during a dispute, according to police. Eric Alberto Ramos-Santiago was booked into the Cache County Jail Monday night after turning himself in to jail deputies.

According to an arrest affidavit, Logan City Police officers responded to a 911 hang up Monday night. When they arrived in the area of 300 S. 500 W. they learned an assault had occurred. The alleged victim had been transported to Logan Regional Hospital with a laceration on their hand and a skull fracture. They were later flown by medical helicopter to McKay-Dee Hospital.

Police interviewed witnesses, who described how Ramos and the alleged victim had been in a verbal dispute earlier in the evening. The suspect left and later returned with a baseball bat, smashing it against the alleged victim’s head. He also stated that he had a gun and lifted up his waist band, before fleeing the area.

Officers found blood on the driveway in multiple locations. There was also a large amount of blood on the hood and driver’s side of a vehicle.

Several hours later, Ramos reportedly turned himself into the Cache County Jail. He later told officers that the alleged victim had threatened to kill him and he was trying to defend himself. He claimed that he was worried the alleged victim would come to his house and kill him or his family, so he grabbed the baseball bat and went back to confront the man, the affidavit explained.

Ramos told police that another individual who was on the passenger side of the vehicle pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. He claimed he ducked and hit the victim as a reflex, and then ran from the area because he was scared he was going to be shot.

The affidavit detailed how police later found the alleged bat at Ramos’ mother’s residence. No firearm was located.

Ramos was arraigned on criminal charges in 1st District Court during a virtual hearing Wednesday afternoon, appearing by web conference from jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.

Judge Brian Cannell ordered Ramos to be held in jail without bail after prosecutors said he was a danger to the community. He ordered him to appear again in court July 11.

Ramos spoke only briefly but was not allowed to speak about the assault. He could face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
