LOGAN – The musical School of Rock is coming to the Ellen Eccles Theatre here with a cast so big that a single production couldn’t hold them all.

So, the Cache Theatre Company will stage two different productions, one featuring the music of Australian rock band AC/DC and another with the heavy metal music of Metallica.

The head-banging show, directed by Whitney Metz, is scheduled to run from Friday, April 21 to Saturday, April 29 at the Eccles Theatre in downtown Logan.

The Cache Theatre Company has carved a welcome niche for itself in our local theater community by presenting relatively new, seldom-seen, non-traditional musicals. That trend began with the bluegrass musical Bright Star and followed-up with equally memorable productions of Spamalot and Legally Blonde.

School of Rock certainly continues that tradition.

The 2015 musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the 2003 film of the same name starring comic/musician Jack Black.

Like the movie, the musical follows an out-of-work musician who talks himself into a position as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, only to recruit young music prodigies to complete in a Battle of the Bands.

Landon Weeks and Chris Metz will split the role of the down-on-his-luck guitarist, Dewey Finn, on alternate nights during the show’s run.

Local favorite Celeste Baillio and Sebrina Woodland will share the spotlight as Rosalie, the uptight principal of the Horace Green School who proves to have hidden depths.

Along for the ride in both casts is the talented Catherine Paul, who stunned local audiences with her vocals as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot.

But most of the attention in School of Rock is rightly focused on the would-be members of Dewey’s scratch band.

On nights when the show features the music of AC/DC, they will be Kaycee Anderson as Summer (the manager); Emmanuel Gustin as the guitarist Zack; Zeke Nolan on keyboards as Lawrence; Mitchell Millecam as the drummer Freddie; Aria LaMalfa as the bassist Katie; and Aline Laranja, Anabelle Holguin, Charlotte Nielson, Elena Weeks and Ella Matthews contributing back-up vocals.

On Metallica nights, those roles will be performed respectively by Tessa Maughan, Drew Williams, Boone Lefler, Leo Matthews, Shelby Ford, Monroe Rigby, Phoebe Nolan, Ellee Downs, Marae Lefler and Noelle Younker.

Scattered over the show’s two casts, more than 60 additional actors will perform as parents, teachers, rock fans and roadies.

Don’t worry about bringing earplugs to the theater, however. In his role of impresario, Webber was well-aware that no audience of Broadway aficionados would sit still for two hours of hard-driving rock music.

So his score for School of Rock includes both traditional theatrical tunes and heavy metal.

Performances of School of Rock featuring the music of AC/DC are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21; Saturday, April 22; Tuesday, April 25; and Thursday, April 27. A matinee is also scheduled on Saturday, April 29.

Performances of School of Rock featuring the music of Metallica lead off with a matinee on Saturday, April 22. Evening performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 24; Wednesday, April 26; Friday April 28 and Saturday, April 29.

Tickets for the CTC production will be available at www.cachearts.com.
