LOGAN — Drug enforcement agents have arrested the former Mantua Police Chief, Shane J. Zilles again. Records show the 50-year-old Wellsville man was booked Friday into the Cache County Jail on suspicion of possessing forged drug prescriptions.
Zilles, who was fired last year after being arrested and later convicted of driving under the influence, is headed for trial next month on another DUI case, allegedly occurring in Logan last summer. The one-day trial is scheduled for March 20 in Logan City Justice Court.
On January 29, 2019, Ziles was pulled over by Utah Highway Patrol troopers near the mouth of Sardine Canyon, US-89/91. He was driving a patrol vehicle between 85-90 mph without his emergency lights or siren activated.
Dash-cam video showed Zilles failing a field sobriety test. His speech was slurred and he struggled to remember what day it was.
Zilles later pleaded guilty to one count of impaired driving, a class B misdemeanor. He was sentenced to complete either five days of community service or two days in jail. He was also placed on probation for one year and ordered to pay a $1,300 fine.
Zilles was arrested again and charged with driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor, after a Logan City police officer pulled him over, near 100 N. Main St. The suspect again appeared to show signs of impairment.
Jail records show Zilles posted a $9,750 bond Friday. He is currently out on bail.
Formal charges from Friday’s arrest are pending the completion of the investigation.
