LOGAN — Learn about “High Voltage and Big Sparks: Electromagnetic Induction”; that is the theme for the 16th annual USU Physics November Demo show – Friday night at 7p.m.in the Emert Auditorium at the Eccles Science Learning Center on campus.
On KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, USU instructor and lab supervisor James Coburn said it will be a fun event.
“Well, the topic for this year is “Electromagnetic Induction”, and most people are like, ‘what the heck is that?’ But they can understand ‘High Voltage & Big Sparks’, so, we will have some pretty high voltages, we’ll get some big sparks out of different things and have a lot of fun,” Coburn said.
Topics that will be addressed include how transformers work, how does wireless charging work and the exploration of the question – can you really shrink a quarter with an electrical current?
Coburn said these shows do involve quite a bit of planning.
“So I will literally pick the topic for the next November demo show, Friday night after the demo show, and I’ll spend a year thinking about it and working on it and coming up with ideas and building things. I’ve used this as a way to build up our demonstration equipment that we use in physics classes all the time, and so many of the things we do use and then there are always new things for the November demo show that people haven’t seen before.”
