MANTUA, Utah — Public health officials have issued a high-level danger warning for Mantua Reservoir after detecting a harmful algal bloom producing dangerous toxins in the water.
The Bear River Health Department announced the advisory, warning the public to avoid multiple recreational activities until conditions clear.
Under the danger health warning, individuals are instructed not to drink the reservoir water and to completely avoid swimming, wading, paddling, or water skiing. Officials also emphasized that dogs must be kept entirely out of the water, as toxic algae can be fatal to pets. Boating is prohibited in any areas where algae is visible.
Anglers are permitted to continue fishing at the reservoir but must carefully discard the skin and internal organs of any fish caught before consumption. Health officials will continue monitoring the water quality in Box Elder County to determine when it is safe to lift the restrictions.
