LOGAN – The city of Logan has commissioned three murals to be painted in local parks during the months of May and June.

“The Art in the Parks Mural program is intended to be the initial step in the implementation of the Logan Public Art Master Plan that was adopted by the Logan City Council in 2020,” according to Aaron Smith, the city’s neighborhood improvement manager.

Smith said that three sites for the murals were selected for their unique locations, community importance and — most importantly — available surfaces for the murals.

Artist Matt Halm will be painting the north tunnel at Merlin Olsen Park between May 9 and 24.

The Central Concession Building at the Soccer Park Complex will be painted by Suzy Gonzales between May 30 and June 17.

Moving back to Merlin Olsen Park, the Ice Rink Building will be painted by Matt Monsoon and Brooklyn Ottens in late June.

Matt Halm is a professional muralist from Allentown, PA.

Smith said that his unique style and perspective have allowed him to create engaging public art for a variety of clients. Halm also works as a mentor and teacher, organizing youth mural programs and community art projects.

Suzy Gonzales is an artist, curator and writer based in San Antonio, TX.

With degrees from Texas State University and the Rhode Island School of Design, Gonzales has exhibited extensively across the country.

Smith said that Gonzales is creating a mural that will highlight portraits of local youngsters playing soccer among Cache Valley’s native plants.

Matt Monsoon and Brooklyn Ottens are both Salt Lake City artists who work in the historic Guthrie Artist Studios there.

Monsoon’s expressive illustrative style pops with color, characters, nature and storylines, according to Smith.

Ottens is known for creating multimedia works using pen and ink, acrylics, aerosols, oils and watercolors on paper and wood panels.

“Logan is excited and privileged to host these excellent artists to create these murals in our community,” Smith said.

A public social to celebrate the completion of each mural is planned, he added, with dates to be announced.

Merlin Olsen Park is located at 300 East Center Street. The Soccer Park Complex is located at 250 Legrand Street.
