VIRGINIA, Idaho — A 45-year-old man from San Luis Obisbo, California has died after driving his car the wrong way along Interstate-15, near the small town of Virginia, Idaho. The three vehicle incident was reported around 11:56 p.m. Tuesday night at milepost 36 in Bannock County.

According to the Idaho State Police, the California man was travelling south in the northbound lanes of I-15, west of Virginia. The 2019 Volkswagon struck a small Toyota SUV that was being driven by a 21-year-old man from Rexburg. The car then struck a Ford pickup, driven by a 34-year-old man from Idaho Falls.

Police report the California man was transported by air ambulance to a local hospital. He died Wednesday due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Toyota SUV was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

The drivers’ identities were not released, pending notification of family.

The road was blocked for approximately 2.5 hours while emergency crews treated the injured and cleared the crash.

This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police and marks the second wrong way crash in Bannock County in the past four days. Saturday morning, a 69-year-old Blackfoot, Idaho man died after being hit by a wrong way driver near Fort Hall.
